Payten Howland started skating at age 6 and skated in Jefferson City until she joined CCFSC and had her first ice dance lesson with Coach Sima Baker when she was 10. After that, she was hooked! She continued her freestyle skating but focused on passing her dances and looking for a partner to ice dance with. With Sima’s help she passed all 23 dances to earn her first gold medal in only 24 months at age 12. She also earned her gold medal in Moves in the field, Solo dance, Solo Free Dance and Canadian Dance, as well as her Novice Freeskate and Junior Free Dance. She started competing at the Intermediate level with Jason Cohn in 2013 placing 5th at U. S. Nationals. Payten and Jason continued to compete moving to the Novice level and finishing 6th at U.S. Nationals in 2014. When Jason decided to focus on Freestyle and his education, Payten moved to Novi, Michigan to partner with Canadian skater Simon-Pierre Malette-Paquette at the Junior level. They are currently in their second season together and have just been named to Team Canada, receiving their first Junior Grand Prix international assignment. They will be representing Team Canada in Colorado Springs, Colorado in September. She treasured her years skating at CCFSC and loves to come home and skate with Sima and her many friends she misses so much!! She is so grateful for CCFSC and the many people who follow her skating and are always there to support her!
Our members were very busy passing tests in May, June and July. Special accolades to Becky Coalson on completing her Pre-Gold Adult ice dance level in May. She passed her Killian to complete the level You can view it on YouTube at https://youtu.be/WUKuP5VsLzk . She even accomplished it by testing on the higher Adult standard rather than the Masters standard.
Also of note, Laura Nicula passed her entire silver dance level all at our test session in May including the Rocker Foxtrot, Silver Tango and American Waltz dances.
Special thanks to all our volunteers who worked (and brought delicious food) to make our May test session run smoothly for our skaters and judges.
In June, Ashley Klotz successfully passed her Novice Free Dance along with passing the Cha Cha Congelado and Rhumba dance tests earlier in the month. Nice dancing!
